Project Background
Faced with the urban waterlogging problem caused by climate change, rain gardens have become a solution that combines beauty, environmental protection and practicality. They can not only store rainwater and regulate microclimate, but also reduce drainage pressure, providing beautiful landscape and comfortable environment.

Program Highlights
Since 2019, the Climate Change Agency has promoted the Smart Rain Garden Project and has set up 16 demonstration sites across Taiwan. The first rain garden was set up at Beitou Elementary School in Taipei City from 2019 to 2020 as a demonstration facility for climate change adaptation. After that, in cooperation with the Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 14 more rain gardens were set up from 2011 to 2012 at Datong Elementary School and Zhongzheng Elementary School in Kaohsiung City, Guinan Elementary School in Tainan City, Dazhi Elementary School and Wuri Junior High School in Taichung City, Chongwen Elementary School in Chiayi City, National Environmental Research Institute in Taoyuan City, Zhongfu Elementary School and Xinjie Elementary School, Nanliao Elementary School in Hsinchu City, Yipin Park, Kangle Park, Xiezaipu Park, and Beiping Waldorf Experimental School in Hsinchu County. There are currently a total of 15 rain gardens in Taiwan, and real-time monitoring and data analysis are carried out through the "Water Retention and Cooling Monitoring System Platform" to provide a basis for promoting the effectiveness of rain gardens.

Bits convergence to create a green city - the wisdom and warmth of rain gardens
Rain gardens, greenery protects the future - using smart monitoring to welcome sustainable hope

Overcoming challenges
-
Equipment location adjustment
Optimize equipment configuration according to on-site environmental conditions to ensure the accuracy of monitoring values.
-
Network and data stability
Select transmission equipment with data backup function to deal with network instability in some fields and avoid data loss.

Results and Benefits
-
Significant cooling effect
The average temperature difference between rain garden pavement and general pavement in summer is 6.6°C, and the water retention rate is as high as 98%.
-
Real-time monitoring
A total of 87 monitoring points in 14 sites across Taiwan realize real-time monitoring of ambient temperature, humidity, rainfall, etc., to assist in future site planning and design.
-
Safety and Accessibility
The system has passed the AA-level barrier-free label certification and passed the information security test to ensure the security of website information. This project successfully demonstrated the outstanding results of smart rain gardens in water retention, cooling and environmental regulation, and provided a national data platform to promote the construction and application of more rain gardens in the future.
