Project Background
The construction and maintenance of urban sewage sewers is an important strategy to extend the life of facilities. Taipei City is extending and optimizing the life of sewage pipelines to enhance the stability and sustainable development of the urban drainage system.
Sewage sewer construction
The main function is to collect and treat domestic sewage, such as sludge, grease, microorganisms and kitchen waste, to avoid direct discharge into rainwater sewer ditches or rivers, which would cause mosquitoes and bacteria to breed and pollute the environment, so as to meet environmental protection standards and improve the quality of urban life. Under the influence of climate change and extreme climate, the instantaneous rainfall brought by typhoons or heavy rains will burden and damage the sewer network system. In particular, heavy rainfall will cause sewage sewer overflows, such as flooding of the road or air and water flushing of manholes, which will have an adverse effect on the performance of the sewer network. The overflow will release many pollutants into the streams and waterways in the suburbs, affecting the ecosystem and biota of the discharge waters, and may also cause accidents to the public.


Mixed rainwater and sewage
The sewer collection system refers to the pipes, pipelines or waterways that transport rainwater, sewage, wastewater, etc. It can be divided into sewage sewers and rainwater sewers according to the nature of drainage. Sewage sewers are sewers that remove rainwater on sunny days. When designed, rainwater is excluded as much as possible, while rainwater sewers are used to remove surface runoff generated by rainwater, including melting ice and snow or washing street wastewater. The collection methods of sewage pipes are divided into combined system and separate system. The combined sewer system uses the same pipe system to collect and transport sewage and rainwater, while the separate sewer system collects and transports sewage and rainwater separately. Due to the heavy rainfall and low river flow in Taiwan, there is a lack of dilution capacity, so most of them use separate sewers.
Wastewater or unknown water may flow through the sewer system pipes through sewer leakage conditions such as cross-connections, illegal connections, overflows or pipe cracks.
Solution Highlights
We successfully assisted Taipei City in the life extension operation of the sewage pipeline with the preliminary investigation of rainwater and sewage mixing, prioritized the inspection and repair of areas affected by heavy rainfall or gas surge, and established a remote water level monitoring system. Through the cloud and smartphone cross-platform system, water level, flow and rainfall data are monitored in real time, greatly improving maintenance and management efficiency.

In order to solve the interference problem of manhole structure, a special measuring tube is set up to improve the measurement accuracy.

Results and Benefits

Real-time Monitoring and Data Integration
60 water level gauges are installed in five administrative districts to provide real-time monitoring of water level and flow, assist in pipeline condition management, and ensure that there are no unknown water sources or pipeline leaks.

Cost reduction
The water level monitoring system replaces traditional CCTV surveys, reducing time and labor costs, and understanding the status of the pipeline network in advance.

The analysis results show that some areas exceed the design water depth, providing an important basis for subsequent pipeline maintenance.
